Humans are unique in that we stand upright. This puts our spines in an “S” curve position, which is optimal for movement but may lead to painful conditions such as upper or lower back pain, arthritis of the neck and spine, herniated discs, and other problems. In order to avoid these health issues, we need bedding that allows our spines to maintain correct alignment while we are lying down.
Potential effects of an improper sleep position:
• promotes painful conditions caused by compression of the intervertebral discs on the nerves of the spinal column;
• prevents relaxation of the muscular system while it attempts (unsuccessfully) to position the spinal column correctly;
• increases compression of the vascular and lymphatic system in pressure zones.
Too little support: causes rigidity of the muscles while they attempt (unsuccessfully) to position the spinal column correctly.
Too much support:increases compression of the vascular and lymphatic system in pressure zones and forces the spinal column into an incorrect position.
Optimal support: by adapting section by section to the anatomy of the body when we are lying down, a good mattress allows correct support from an orthopedic point of view and also promotes relaxation of the vascular and lymphatic system in pressure zones.
When we cannot completely relax during sleep, our bodies cannot progress through the phases of deep (paradoxical) sleep. This can cause problems such as stress, a feeling of not being completely rested, and slower response times. Our body position during sleep is a primary factor to consider when selecting the ideal mattress and foundation system. The ideal system enhances the quality of our sleep and thus our quality of life.
Our body type (lean, rounded, plump, thin) and the position in which we sleep (normally on our back or side, with our knees bent) determine the weight distribution on our body when we lie down. These factors are a good indication that standard mattresses and bed systems may turn out to be ineffective or even have negative effects.
Good bedding should offer the following qualities:
• correct support of the spinal column from an orthopedic point of view • relaxation of the muscular system • improved circulation of the blood to allow cellular regeneration • maintenance of proper body temperature • proper health and safety features • the ability to erase the stresses of the day during a good night’s sleep • good bedding should also be comfortable, pleasant to lie on, and must correctly support the back

Your bed, a friend on your side If you have trouble falling asleep, you may be tempted to search for a cause other than your mattress. However, your mattress could well be to blame…
A large-scale survey showed that we currently average 7 hours and 6 minutes of sleep per night.
Another European survey found that half of consumers say that they change their mattress at least once every 10 years. This average is contradicted by industry figures, which show that most people replace their bedding approximately every 13 years.
The work of a neurologist at the University Hospital Center in Montpellier, France, has shown that people sleeping in new bedding enjoy an extra 53 minutes of restorative sleep. This is a good reminder of the essential role that good bedding plays in sleep quality, and thus in overall health.
A few tips for sleeping well at night. The golden rule for good sleep: a good mattress. How often do you hear people complaining about sleep problems and backaches? Remember that the right bedding can dramatically improve these symptoms. The mattress should give more where the pressure is the greatest, on the shoulders and the pelvis, and it should support the body in proportion to the user’s size. It is a myth that there is one type of good mattress.
Beware of a mattress that is too firm! The proper type of mattress is important for a healthy back. People with lower back pain are often advised to choose a firmer mattress. On the contrary, they should avoid a mattress that is too hard. A bed that is too hard does not adapt to the weight of the thorax and the pelvis. The curves of the spine are not supported and the muscles cannot relax during sleep.

The soft tissue in the body is compressed, circulation is poor, and there is no support for the spinal column during the night.
|
|
A bed that is too soft does not support the spine effectively. The heavier parts (thorax, pelvis) sink into the bed, and the position becomes uncomfortable. Since the body does not have enough support, the muscles and the spine contract and cannot rest.

Proper mattress, perfect alignment of the spinal column

Clearly, a person who weighs 45 kilograms does not need the same mattress as someone who weighs 120 kilograms. The example above shows the perfect bedding that fits the body and supports it at the different pressure points.
